In the US, common eye diseases affect a sizable part of the population. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), in 2010, 2.1 million Americans had age-related macular degeneration (AMD), 2.7 million had glaucoma, 24.4 million had cataracts, and 7.7 million had diabetic retinopathy.
